Tips for Hanging Outdoor Holiday Lights and Local Holiday Light Installers

Read time: < 1 minute

Austin, TX – It’s that special time of year when the neighborhood gets a little brighter. Homes across the country twinkle in the night as hundreds of lights line roof, windows, and landscaping. We’ll help you plan out your holiday display and give you tips on how to safely hang outdoor lights to give your home a touch of holiday magic! Not up for completing the task yourself? We’ve curated a list of local professional holiday light installers that can get the job done!

Steps to Hanging Outdoor Holiday Lights

Step 1: Make a Display Plan

Plan out how you want your holiday display to look. Decide what your holiday decoration goals are. Do you want to light up the entire street? Plan for two sets of lights. Want to set the scene? Purchase your lawn decore to create a holiday tableau. It helps to sketch out what you want your home to look like, even if you are no Michael Angelo. This will allow you to communicate your vision to anyone who will be assisting you.

Step 2: Measure and Evaluate Your Home Surfaces

It’s Important to measure and evaluate your home surfaces, so you know what materials you need to purchase and at what sizes and length. Areas of the home you should assess and measure include:

  • The roofline and eaves of your house (safely use a ladder with a safety partner to spot)
  • Windows and door frames
  • Trees, bushes, and hedges
  • Pillars and railings
  • Driveway and walking paths
  • Step 3: Make Sure You Have The Right Materials

After you have measured and evaluated your home, create a list of materials you will need to complete the job. Take a trip to your local Home Depot or Lowes and share your list with a service expert who can point you in the right direction. You can even shop online and have your materials shipped or ready for in-store pick-up. Necessary items include:

  • Lights
  • Display Decorations
  • Timers and Controllers
  • Holiday Light Clips
  • Ladder
  • Adhesive Hooks
  • Light-hanging Pole
  • Step 4: Test the Lights

Finding out you have a bundle of busted lights after installation is a way to dim your holiday spirit. Test your lights on the ground before hanging them on your home to ensure they are all working. Even if they are new, you will want to test the lights and replace any busted bulbs.

    Step 5: Attach Lights

Attach light clips around the house and make sure they are all placed in the same direction. Hang your lights up or down, depending on your style. For hanging lights in a tree, try using a light-hanging pole instead of a ladder. Be sure to practice ladder safety and have another person spotting you for extra precaution.

    Step 6: Set a Timer

An outdoor plug-in timer will keep you from having your lights on all day and all night, needlessly driving up your electric bill. Purchase a light timer and set it so that your lights turn on and off when you’d like. Some timers even have light sensors that will automatically turn on as the sun goes down.

Step 7: Light Up The Night

Turn on your lights and relish in all your hard work. Enjoy your holiday display, and don’t forget to snap a photo for the memory book!
