If you’ve made the road trip trek around Texas, you already know how eventful and scenic the drive can get. Sometimes a trip can take several hours or a couple of days, but you’ll pass by a diverse array of cities and towns that each offer something unique and special. No matter the route you take, you’re bound to have a great time. From the popular Magnolia Market in Waco to Kolaches and pit stops at Buc-ee’s, your Texas road trip will not disappoint. Balmorhea State Park

More than 15 million gallons of water flow through Balmorhea State Park pool each day, gushing from the San Solomon Springs. The pool is up to 25 feet deep, covers 1.3 acres, and holds 3.5 million gallons of water. The water temperature stays at 72 to 76 degrees year-round. Dive into the crystal-clear water of the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool. Swim, scuba dive, or relax under the trees at this historic park in arid West Texas! Because of the large pool and ocean-like activities, it’s guaranteed you’ll feel like your by the beach! It’s the perfect cool down for your Texas road trip!

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the park will remain closed for the summer. But the park plans to reopen in the fall!

Blanco State Park

Blanco State Park in Blanco County surrounds a mile of the Blanco River. Most activities revolve around the river like swimming, boating (electric motors only) and fishing. The park has tubes and canoes available for rental. Every year, the Blanco State Park hosts the Blanco Classic Car Show on the third Saturday in May. Blanco State Park offers a variety of interpretive and educational programs like Nature Study and Kayaking 101. Check out the events calendar for scheduled programs!

Before coming to Blanco State Park, make sure you make a reservation for the day or for overnight camping! Only groups of 10 or less will be allowed per group.

Multiple Locations

At Braum’s, they are committed to doing things better. The Braum’s Dairy Farm in Tuttle is one of the largest dairy operations in the world! They’re also busy baking cookies, muffins, bread, and more (which are made fresh every day) at the Braum’s Bakery. Each Braum’s is “3 stores in 1” with a grill, old fashioned ice cream fountain, and a Fresh Market Grocery. It’s the perfect place to make a pit stop with the family on a Texas road trip! All of their stores are located in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas, so it’s certain you won’t miss it on your drive!

Any Texan who has traveled on Interstate 35 north or Interstate 10 east of San Antonio knows that Buc-ee’s is the place to seek roadside relief. Buc-ee’s, a Texas friendly neighbor along the highways, has the cleanest restrooms in America! Most Texans already knew that, though. But it was made official on Monday when Buc-ee’s won a nationwide competition for having the best restrooms in America. Even though Buc-ee’s has the cleanest restrooms, they offer more than roadside relief. You can literally find any kind of snack that you need to make your road trip better!

Czech Stop

For many years, Czech Stop has been promoting that Czech Heritage spirit so popular in the small town of West, Texas. Whether serving the neighbors down the street or travelers off of I-35, Czech Stop takes great pride in providing every customer with complete satisfaction. They are open 24/7, so their doors never ever close! Are you hungry from your long road trip? Czech Stop has a variety of sandwiches; ham, turkey, beef on wheat, rye and white loaves of bread. Or are you holding out for the Kolaches? No worries, they have tons; ham, sausage, many types of fruit!

Downtown La Grange

La grange is a small town nestled along the Colorado River with rolling hills, historic architecture and restaurants that make for the perfect day trip from Austin! There are a lot of things to do in La Grange, including kayaking the Colorado River. Drive up to one of several docks and spend a morning on the peaceful, slow-moving water amidst lush foliage. Check out Monument Hill, a historic crypt commemorating Texas Independence fighters, and a vista that overlooks the town of La Grange. Evidence of Czech and German influence can be felt in La Grange, which can only mean kolaches! Try Weikel’s Bakery kolaches, or if you want something different, stop by Bistro 108. If you want to do something more relaxing, stop into Bodega for a glass of wine or a pint of craft beer.

Hamilton Pool

This historic swimming hole is another treasure beloved by Austin natives. Located three-quarters of a mile upstream from the Pedernales River, Hamilton Creek spills over a 50-foot waterfall, forming the natural pool in a steep box canyon. Get there early, as there is a maximum number of visitors they allow into the preserve. Otherwise, plan on waiting in your vehicle for up to an hour before being admitted! If it hasn’t rained recently, take the path to the left when the trail to Hamilton Pool forks. It will lead you to a spot where the Hamilton Creek and Pedernales River meet. It also provides some gorgeous scenery!

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the park will remain closed until further notice.

Health Camp

Way back in 1948, just three years after World War II, brother-in-laws Jack Schaevitz and Lou Stein moved to Waco, Texas from Youngstown, Ohio. They built a mobile canteen to serve ice cream and burgers to military personnel at the Connally Air Force Base in Waco, Texas. The mobile canteen was such a hit that a year later in 1949 they built the Health Camp! The original building is still located on the Waco Traffic Circle. The late Mr. Tinsley was a pioneer in the early fast food industry, and his restaurant continues today offering the finest frozen custard, shakes, malts, and burgers. Y’all go check out Health Camp and get an old-fashioned hamburger, and the best shakes ever!

Hunt, Texas

Hunt, Texas is located where the north and south forks of the Guadalupe River meet and close on Kerrville and Ingram. The area is known for the many festivals they host. Hunt is an extremely beautiful location with its huge trees and rugged limestone. Schumacher’s Crossing is a popular swimming hole located on State Hwy 39. This swimming hole has been listed in the top ten swimming holes in the Texas Hill Country area and is often a very populated area. Tourists enjoy this swimming hole because of how clean the water and area is. Criders is home to Rodeo on Dance. The Rodeo is every Saturday at 8:00 PM beginning on Memorial Day and runs up until Labor Day. The Dancehall is located under a giant Oak tree that spreads out above the dance floor. Visit Criders for a fun-filled night of chatting, relaxing, and dancing with your friends and family!

Inks Lake State Park

Discover the beauty of the Texas Hill Country at Inks Lake State Park. The park has 1,201 acres of recreational facilities next to Inks Lake on the Colorado River. Visitors can explore the park by camping and backpacking, and can also enjoy recreational water sports. Inks Lake stays at a constant water level all year, so droughts do not affect water-related activities. Inks Lake also has a has a cool swimming spot named Devils waterhole that you can explore! You’re able to swim, boat, or scuba dive on Inks Lake regardless of droughts in Central Texas!

Johnson City
