The Best Gay Bars and Events in Austin

It’s not hard to find some of the best events and gay bars in Austin because the city is known to be very LGBTQ+-friendly, and many places around town are open to all. But if you’re specifically looking for a place to celebrate Pride Month, or generally looking to meet great people in the community throughout the calendar year, we’ve rounded up the best events and places to visit around town.

211 W 4th St.

Oilcan Harry’s is Austin’s oldest gay bar and has been serving up drinks and fun for over 30 years. If you’re looking for a busy nightlife scene where many younger university students gather, Oilcan Harry’s is the place to be! Attend celebrity events with nationally recognized DJs and drag stars, weekly drag shows, and karaoke.

Cheer Up Charlies is a beloved gay bar and music venue located downtown and on Red River Street.  The bar offers creative cocktails like the Kale Lime Margarita, kombucha on tap, and vegan bites to keep you energized and partying all night long. The best part about this gay bar is the limestone stage that hosts local and well-known musicians throughout the year.

Rain on 4th is one of the most popular gay clubs in Austin since its opening in 2004. Located on 4th street’s warehouse district where many gay bars are located, Rain on 4th is an upscale location where drag shows and dancing the night away is expected.

The Iron Bear is welcome to bears and all to gather, relax, and have fun. The staff at the Iron Bear are friendly and inviting, and make you feel like you’ve been a regular even if it’s your first time attending. Enjoy fun events like Musical Mondays and Underwear Night every second Saturday of the month.

Austin Black Pride was created in 2016 to recognize and create more awareness around the Black and Queer community. The organization hosts cultural events and workshops throughout the year but is hosting an Austin Black Pride Celebration from June 8th – June 13th. Celebration events include yoga, speaker events, and a rooftop party at the Coconut Club. 

Multiple locations

While June is nationally recognized as Pride Month, Austin Pride Month is hosted in August. Gather on August 14th for the PRIDE Parade that starts at Congress Avenue and concludes in the Warehouse District. The Austin PRIDE Festival is hosted at Fiesta Gardens in East Austin and will have live music, inflatable games, and food and beverages.
