Austin Ranks Among U.S. Fittest Cities

Read time: < 1 minute

Run on Town Lake? Bike the 360 Loop? Hike around the Greenbelt? These words are often heard throughout offices and amongst friends who indulge in this city’s exercise-friendly attractions. No wonder Austin was listed as one of the highest scoring cities on American College of Sports Medicine’s American Fitness Index. The index ranks the 50 biggest U.S. cities based on preventive health behaviors, chronic disease levels, access to health care and community resources and policies that support physical activity. Austin scored 73.5 out of 100 possible points. Shape magazine also ranked Austin high on its poll of fittest cites and attributed Austin’s healthly population to the city’s plethora of parks (220 to be exact) and its extremely active youth community.

The Top Fitttest Cities in America:

  1. Washington, DC
  2. Boston, MA
  3. Minneapolis, MN
  4. Seattle, WA
  5. Portland, OR
  6. Denver, CO
  7. Sacramento, CA
  8. San Francisco, CA
  9. Hartford, CT
  10. Austin, TX

How did Texas fair in the poll? Well, Dallas was No. 40, Houston was No. 42 and San Antonio was No. 43. Overall, Texas has room for improvement with 3 out of 4 metros in the worst 10. But thankfully, Austin is helping the average quite a bit.
